Why music matters in a charity shop.

Music changes how people shop, and how it feels to work in a shop. In our 21-day in-store research with charity shop chain DEBRA, the same shop traded to pop, classical and jazz music. Days with jazz playing averaged around 66% more sales than pop days, with classical days around 35% more. Staff said that calmer genres made the shop feel more welcoming, with customers lingering longer, browsing more closely and chatting more. When the money you’re raising is life changing, every decision matters.

How DEBRA’s shops found their sound.

DEBRA, the UK charity supporting people living with the genetic skin condition EB, came to Startle looking for royalty-free music that suited its shops and shoppers, without creating extra work for their volunteers and managers who were busy sorting donations and serving customers.

Our music team built their playlists across a range of genres and energies, landing on an easygoing, wholesome sound of pop, indie pop and pop rock. We handle their scheduling for each day of the week and each area of the shop, and the music plays through their Google Nest speakers. DEBRA were delighted with the results, and even went on to take part in our genre research.

Frequently asked questions.

How does Startle manage background music across multiple charity shop locations?

Startle’s Studio platform gives head office central control over music and digital signage across every shop in your network. You set the playlist and the schedule, and volunteers and staff at individual shops can’t override your brand sound.

Is Startle cost-effective for a charity with a large shop estate?

Yes. Startle charges a predictable monthly cost per location, with no surprise hardware fees. Free next-day shipping, plug-and-play setup and no-quibble hardware replacement are all included as standard, so there are no unexpected costs.

Can Startle provide digital signage for charity shop windows and in-store screens?

Yes. Signage runs from the same Studio platform as the music, so your team can schedule donation appeals, campaign content and brand messaging across every screen in every shop from one dashboard.

Do I need a commercial music licence for my charity shops?

Yes, playing music in commercial premises requires a licence. Find out more about music licensing here.
