New research reveals dark music genres are growing rapidly worldwide.
Ever feel like you need to listen to something dark and moody to match your mood? You’re not alone. Around the world, listeners are increasingly turning to darker, more atmospheric sub-genres of their favourite music styles - and the growth is happening fast. As a provider of background music and digital signage solutions for retail and hospitality, we have a unique perspective on how music trends like these are shaping the atmosphere and customer experience in physical spaces.
Our new research reveals that “dark music” genres are seeing a huge surge in popularity across search engines, social media platforms, and streaming services. In fact, global search interest in 11 dark music sub-genres has increased by an average of 219% over the past year.
From Dark Country to Dark R&B, listeners are exploring the moodier side of music more than ever before.
Dark music is a broad term used to describe music that feels melancholic, eerie, ominous, or emotionally heavy. Most mainstream genres now have darker counterparts - including pop, country, EDM, hip-hop and R&B.
These genres often feature:
Artists in Dark Pop and Dark R&B have helped bring the sound into the mainstream, while streaming platforms have made it easier than ever for listeners to discover niche sub-genres that match specific moods.
By analysing global Google search data, social media activity, and Spotify playlist popularity, we identified which dark music genres are growing the fastest and which are dominating overall.
Dark Country currently ranks as the most popular dark music genre overall, attracting more than 452,000 searches globally each month.
Country music has grown significantly in popularity in the UK in recent years, and interest in its darker counterpart is rising too. Search interest in Dark Country has increased by 50% over the past year, with more than 11,000 monthly searches in the UK alone.
Interestingly, the countries most interested in Dark Country aren’t just traditional country music markets. The United States leads search volume, followed by Brazil and Germany - suggesting the appeal of dark music is less about genre loyalty and more about mood and atmosphere.
While Dark Country dominates overall popularity, several other genres are growing at a much faster rate.
The biggest growth areas include:
This shows that darker sounds are emerging across electronic, hip-hop and R&B scenes, not just guitar-based genres.
Different platforms are driving different dark music trends.
Dark Pop dominates social media, generating the most activity across TikTok, Instagram and Reddit through hashtags, posts and discussions.
However, Dark Country is the clear favourite on Spotify, with the highest number of dedicated playlists among all dark sub-genres we analysed.
This highlights how discovery happens differently across platforms - social media drives trends and aesthetics, while streaming platforms drive listening behaviour.
There are several reasons why darker music genres are gaining popularity.
Firstly, streaming platforms like Spotify and Apple Music have made it easier than ever for listeners to discover niche genres. Recommendation algorithms often suggest mood-based playlists, and dark music fits perfectly into categories like “moody”, “melancholy” or “late night”.
Secondly, there has been a broader shift away from strict genre categories toward mood-based listening. Many listeners now choose music based on how they feel rather than what genre they usually listen to.
Finally, there may be wider cultural reasons behind the trend. During periods of economic uncertainty, global instability and general anxiety, people often turn to music as a way to process emotions. Darker music can provide a cathartic release and help listeners channel feelings like sadness, anger or stress.
Whatever the reason behind the trend, the data is clear - darker music genres are no longer a fringe interest. They’re becoming a meaningful part of how people discover, consume and connect with music.
As streaming platforms continue to push mood-based discovery and audiences continue to explore more niche sounds, dark sub-genres are likely to keep growing across every major music category.
This study was conducted between 10th - 17th of March 2026. The initial seed list was created from the most popular music genres and combining this with 'dark', which was then researched across multiple tools and platforms to gather their popularity 'dark soul' was excluded due to the data intent being irrelevant).
Their overall global search interest was taken from digital advertising tools such as Keyword Planner, which reports the average monthly search volume across various countries, and social listeners such as Glimpse, which combines signalling across the internet to establish worldwide and UK trends. This was then combined with both major social media platforms, such as TikTok, Instagram and Reddit to gather evidence of the number of videos posted that tagged 'dark' music genres. Spotify playlists were also scraped to see the number of playlists that had specified 'dark' music genres in their playlist titles.
